Cruise Ship in Norway Evacuates Passengers After Engine Problems

A cruise ship located off the western coast of Norway is currently trying to evacuate about 1,300 people from the ship after it began suffering engine problems, authorities said.

According to Norway's sea rescue agency, the MV Viking Sky sent out a distress signal amid high waves and strong winds. Police in Norway say passengers on board the ship are being taken to shore. At one point, the current began taking the cruise ship closer to the shore, but workers on board were able to restart at least one engine to help the ship regain its course while the evacuation continued. The ship is less than 2.5 nautical miles from the shore.

No serious injuries have been reported, but at least 5 people have been taken to local hospitals.

It's unclear how many people have been evacuated from the ship so far. Police say they expect the operation to take several hours.

Waves in the area, known as the Hustadvika, are reportedly more than 30 feet high, forcing lifeboats to turn back to the ship due to the "brutal conditions." Winds are blowing at 38 knots, police said.

The MV Viking Sky is a Viking Ocean Cruises ship which took its maiden voyage in 2017. It has the ability to carry 930 guests on board.
