- Sweatcoin is a new app that hopes to get people sticking to their New Year’s resolutions by paying them
- The app connects to someone's phone’s fitness and location data, and when it computes that they've gotten in 1,000 steps, they earn 95 cents in sweatcoins
- Users can then cash in their sweatcoins for things like workout gear or classes, or they can even donate them to charities
This reminds me, in a twsited way, of an episode of a twisted show that I love on Netflix, Black Mirror. One episode is a satire on entertainment shows and our insatiable thirst for distraction set in a sarcastic version of a future reality. In this world, everyone is confined to a life of strange physical drudgery. They have to ride exercise bikes to gain merits to buy things. The only way to escape this life is to enter the 'Hot Shot' talent show and pray you can impress the judges.
